St. 约翰的 is on the path with a roadmap to achieve 50 percent carbon emissions reduction from energy consumed by buildings by year 2030. Within the new NYC Climate Mobilization Act of 2019 t在这里 are tiered emissions compliance targets for 2024 和 2030. Being below the emissions limits for 2024, St. 约翰的 is developing plans to meet its 2030 emissions limit 和 includes renewable energy sources such as geothermal 和 solar power.

Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, & Rating System™ (星星)

Municipal Solid 浪费 & 回收

Student Sustainability Coordinators
自2008年起,. 约翰的 has maintained a team of student workers as Sustainability Coordinators. 的se students perform a variety of tasks, from policing campus-wide recycling of municipal solid waste to running campaigns for student involvement in energy conservation. 的se workers perform daily collection of food waste to generate on-site composting, as well as maintain the organic garden 和 run numerous special events.

St. 约翰的 is a charter participant in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s FRC program, which has three primary actions: food waste prevention; food recovery for donation; 和 food waste composting.

Food 浪费 Compost System
每年,圣. 约翰的 composts on-site over 100 tons of food waste (95% of all campus food waste). 的 Office of Sustainability with student workers built 和 operate an aerated static pile (ASP) three-bin composting system. Source separation is done by Chartwells Dining Service, 然后, 食物垃圾(1),000 pounds per day) is processed through a pulper machine. 每个星期, the pulped food waste is mixed with wood chips 和 loaded into one of three ASP composting bins. Student Community Garden
的 student community garden is an organic vegetable garden built 和 maintained by student workers 和 the 学生地球俱乐部. 的 garden consists of more than 50 semi-raised planting beds with organic soils, automatic irrigation, 和 central drainage system. Students harvest 和 deliver the vegetables to help support St. 约翰的面包 & 生活汤厨 在纽约布鲁克林. Over 1,000 pounds of vegetables are harvested annually.
On-Site Food 浪费 Compost System
St. 约翰的 began composting food waste in 2009. In 2011, through the Office of Sustainability, student workers built a large-scale aerated static pile (ASP) three-bin composting facility. Each day during academic semesters, student workers pick up about 1,000 pounds of preconsumer 和 postconsumer food waste from five campus kitchens 和 process it through a pulper machine. 每个星期, the pulped food waste is mixed with wood chips 和 loaded into one of three ASP (6-cubic yard) bins. After three weeks in the ASP followed by 10 weeks in winnow, the compost is 然后 screened/finished 和 applied to the campus grounds. 每年,圣. 约翰的 recovers about 42 tons of food waste 和 paper napkins for composting 和 mixes it with 12 tons of wood chips.
Compost Tea Brewing 和 Application
Compost made on-site is also used in compost tea brewing. After brewing the tea, organic solutions 和 minerals are added 和 the tea is applied /sprayed to the soils in campus tree 和 shrub beds. 的 University conducts compost tea brewing workshops in the spring 和 fall. 的se workshops presents a cocurricular opportunity for students 和 faculty to learn about composting, 土壤生物学, 和 the soil food web.
